What I'm Watching: Chapter Two- Dexter

In a sea of mediocre television, there are a few sparkling gems. Some happen purely by accident, and some are shear strokes of creative genius. The latter is the case for a certain television series on Showtime called: Dexter.
I had heard of this show and was instantly interested in watching it, but I didn't have Showtime, and I wasn't about to go out and get it for just one show.As luck, and the writer's association, would have it there was a massive lack of television last spring which forced CBS to do some creative thinking. And starting in March, they aired the entire season of Dexter on Sunday Nights. So I turned my TV on and gave it a shot.
T
he Synopsis is pretty catchy. Set in Miami, we follow Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst for the homicide division of the Miami police squad. Typical crime drama right? Wrong! The twist: Dexter not only helps catch serial killers... he secretly is one. To fill the urge he has for blood, he goes on the hunt for killers, rapists and various other "bad guys" who get away with crimes. But during the day, he struggles to be a normal brother, co-worker and boyfriend.Coming into this show, I was really hoping for some fresh ideas, things I hadn't seen before. And I was not let down.
The thing about this show, unlike any other before it, is that you are actually wanting the bad guy to win. You don't want him to get caught, you want him to have a normal life, and you want him to keep killing. It seems strange, but in a sense you really are rooting for the bad guy.
The thing that really makes him human is his inner monologue. He narrates the entire day with random thoughts he's thinking, so you really get into his head. It's fascinating and the plot lines are endless. So if you're into a nail-biting TV show that plays out like a movie- check out Dexter. Seasons one and two are out on DVD and the season three opener starts this Sunday (September 28th). I reccomend sitting down with a nice margarita- as it gets you in the Miami mindset.
